Background:
Gregory Mumford was born in Hamilton (Canada) on April 11 1965. During a period when
his father (see J. Gordon
Mumford, author) was an instructor for the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA) and on other aid programs overseas, Gregory Mumford grew up in Nairobi,
Kenya (1965-75), in Niagara Falls, Canada (1976), and Pretoria, Republic of South Africa
(1976-80).
When his parents returned to Canada in 1980, settling near Vancouver, British Columbia,
he completed his Secondary School education in Richmond BC before heading to eastern
Canada to begin his post-secondary education at the University of Toronto.

Gregory Mumford enrolled in Ancient Near Eastern studies programs in the Department of
Near Eastern Studies (now Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations) at the University of
Toronto, obtaining a four year honours Bachelor of Arts in Egyptology (specialist),
Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology (Major), and Anthropology (Minor). He continued his
education at this institution, receiving a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in
Egyptian Archaeology (Major field), Egyptian Language and Literature (Minor field), and
Syro-Palestinian Archaeology (Minor field), with additional graduate course work in
Nubian, Mesopotamian, and Aegean archaeology.
