Satellite Image Interpretation:
Satellite Images & Aerial Photography Studies:Sarah Parcak (Cambridge University) is currently studying diverse aspects regarding archaeological sites in satellite images and aerial photographs covering the East Delta. Of note, She has recently obtained a 1968 satellite image revealing the extent to which the mound of Tell Tebilla has been cut into over the past 31 years. Her preliminary results, which she illustrated at the ARCE 2003 annual meeting, have illuminated the full significance of Tebillas Late Period temple, the enclosure wall of which is clearly visible in a 1968 satellite image. The 1968 image reveals the east-west and north-south mud brick enclosure walls extending at least 230 by 330 metres, respectively, while the surviving centre of the enclosure area contains an area that might represent the "ruins" indicated on the 1930-50 Survey Map of Egypt plan of Tell Balala (Tebilla). This discovery places the minimum size of Tebillas Late Period temple complex at around 25% of the size of the irregularly shaped temple enclosure (450 by 650 metres) at the provincial capital at Mendes (12 km to the south).
