Few modern states could hope to police their borders as effectively as did many of the governments that occupied the Nile Valley from the Old Kingdom through the Roman Period.  Due to formidable cataracts to the south, deserts to the east and west, and inimical coastal terrain to the north, vulnerable points of entry to Egypt were few in number and relatively defensible against invading armies, migrants, smugglers, fugitives and other undesirables.  This conference seeks to bring together Egyptologists, Classicists and specialists in the ancient Near East in an effort to explore the geopolitical evolution of Egypt's border defences and efforts at internal policing.  While Egypt's topography remained largely static, its governments and those of nearby polities did not.  It is precisely this interplay between landscape, militaristic priorities, cultures and economy that will occupy the attentions of the scholars participating in this conference at the University of Wales Swansea, May 22-25, 2006.
